ABOUT THE DESTINATION

The Maasai Mara: Africa's Crown Jewel

The Maasai Mara National Reserve is Kenya’s most celebrated wildlife sanctuary, spanning 1,510 square kilometers of pristine savannah, acacia woodlands, and riverine forests. Named after the Maasai people who have lived alongside wildlife for centuries and the Mara River that flows through it.

Home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife including the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino), the Mara offers some of the best game viewing in Africa year-round. But it’s the annual Great Migration – when over 2 million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross from the Serengeti – that makes this reserve truly legendary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, the Maasai Mara is very safe for tourists. You’ll be accompanied by experienced guides at all times during game drives. Camps and lodges have security, and wildlife viewing is done from the safety of safari vehicles. Kenya’s tourism industry is well-regulated with high safety standards.

Fly-in safaris take 45 minutes from Nairobi vs 5-6 hours by road. Flying saves time and energy, includes scenic aerial views, and allows more game drive time. Road safaris cost less and include scenic stops at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. Choose fly-in for time efficiency; road for budget and scenic journey.

The Mara offers excellent Big Five viewing chances year-round. Lions, elephants, and buffalo are seen on almost every safari. Leopards require patience but sightings are common. Rhinos are the rarest but our guides know the best areas. Multi-day safaris significantly increase your chances of seeing all five.

Tipping is customary but not mandatory. Suggested amounts: Driver-guide $15-25 per person per day, Camp staff (shared box) $10-15 per person per day. Tips are greatly appreciated and supplement local incomes. We can provide guidance on tipping etiquette before your trip.

Most camps offer WiFi in common areas (speed varies). Phone signal is available in many areas of the reserve but can be patchy. Consider this a chance to disconnect! Camps have satellite communication for emergencies.

Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from an endemic country. Recommended: Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and antimalarials (the Mara is in a malaria zone). Consult your doctor or travel clinic 6-8 weeks before travel for personalized advice.
