EXPLORE THE MAASAI MARA

Olderkesi Conservancy

Olderkesi Conservancy lies beside the south-eastern corner of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, north of Tanzania’s Serengeti. Community land and tourism support an important wildlife connection in the wider ecosystem. Olderkesi is outside the Reserve and has its own organised visitor arrangements.

Olderkesi Conservancy: location and landscape

Olderkesi occupies a borderland setting linking the Mara, Serengeti and Loita landscapes. That ecological relationship is important for wildlife movement, but it does not create a visitor border crossing. A Kenyan Olderkesi stay and a Tanzanian Serengeti visit require distinct transport and entry arrangements.

Community and management

Olderkesi’s conservation model involves the community and Cottar’s Wildlife Conservation Trust, working with the community trust and tourism. Land leases, biodiversity protection and community priorities are part of this approach. The conservancy is not administered as a section of the National Reserve.

Wildlife and habitat

The conservation landscape protects habitat and movement routes rather than a closed collection of animals. Drives explore the permitted wildlife areas with a guide. Seasonal herd movements and resident wildlife form different viewing interests; a position near the Serengeti boundary does not guarantee migration herds beside a camp.

Camps and accommodation

Cottar’s 1920s Camp and Cottar’s Bush Villa are documented accommodation in the Olderkesi setting. They provide different room and private-house formats. Their specific programmes determine drives, guided activities and transfers; the conservancy name is not a substitute for the named accommodation product.

Activities and access

Cottar’s publishes game drives, guided walking and conservation-related experiences in its Olderkesi programme. These are organised activities with specific arrangements, rather than general permission to walk within the National Reserve or cross into Tanzania. The itinerary identifies the wildlife area used for each outing.

Admission belongs in the full programme

Conservancy access and Reserve admission are separate components
ComponentWhat the itinerary covers
Conservancy accessThe booked property and programme define the conservancy wildlife access included in the stay.
National Reserve visitAny scheduled Reserve entry is identified separately in the itinerary and quote.
Accommodation-only bookingThe room product defines its board, drives, transfers and compulsory-charge inclusions.
Private safari bookingMaasaiMara.ke quotes the complete agreed programme, including its scheduled fees and compulsory selected-property charges.

Seasons and the right base

Resident wildlife and the landscape give a conservancy stay a purpose beyond the main migration. The travel month changes vegetation, rainfall and the broader wildlife context. Use the best-time guide to compare the seasons; there is no universal best month for every visitor’s interests.

The conservancy-fees guide explains admission distinctions. A complete quote prevents a room price, a conservancy charge and a Reserve visit being treated as interchangeable products. The scheduled charges belong in that complete programme.

Book the correct arrival service

For a flight-based stay, use the airline’s airstrip and baggage information for the booked service. The correct strip follows the named camp and collection arrangement.
